Kanonkop Estate is a family winery spanning four generations, now in the safe hands of brothers Paul and Johann Krige. The name is a perfect representation of the wine that they produce - a booming cannon shot from a hilltop (or kop), big, full of character, and impossible to ignore.

The estate is located in South Africa’s southern tip, in the esteemed region of Simonsberg, Stellenbosch. The soil here is ancient, composed of decomposed granite and dense clay, giving rise to rich Pinotage and bold Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the basis of this delicious single-varietal red wine.

Bursting with ripe dark fruits and a complex range of savoury notes, from graphite to wet soil and black tea, this is a deep, powerful red. Oak spice details can also be discovered on the nose, gained from 24 months of maturation in French oak casks. The palate is a sumptuous experience, blending blackberry, cassis and black cherry with tobacco smoke and roasted coffee bean. With its precise acidity and silky tannic structure, this wine shows a lot of promise for extended ageing, but can also be enjoyed right now. Think about pairing it with a rich cut of meat, such as a steak or braised beef, or a pungent hard cheese.
