Casa Ferreirinha Quinta da Leda 2018
Casa Ferreirinha Quinta da Leda 2018 from 8wines
Drink now or cellar for up to 11 years. No need to decant before serving. The Ferreira name has been connected with top Portuguese wine for over 250 years. Today Casa Ferreririnha has a reputation for being the first company in the Porto region to dedicate itself to making dry wines rather than the traditional sweet Ports. The company takes its name from the legendary local businesswoman Dona Antónia Ferreira who played a key role in the Portuguese wine industry during the 19th century. Head winemaker Luis Sottomayor skilfully uses the warm Douro climate to produce generous, well-structured red wines that are carefully balanced with freshness. This bottling is made with grapes sourced from the Quinta da Leda estate which was planted after extensive research with the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro de Vila Real to discover which were the best clones of local grape varieties to use on this site. Following the harvest the grapes are macerated and fermented in stainless steel tanks with each variety vinified separately. The wine is then matured in 50% new and 50% used oak barrels for 18 months before the final composition of the blend is decided and the wine is bottled. On the nose there are intense aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet spices which are joined on the palate by hints of dried herbs, tobacco and cherries. There is a rich full body tempered by a flash of freshness, fine tannins and a long finish.
